Thief River Falls, MN
Digi-Key Electronics ships products to more than 170 countries worldwide from a single location in Thief River Falls, MN. Digi-Key's ongoing growth in both domestic and international sales is driving the need for increased capacity. Widseth Smith Nolting has worked for the large electronics distributor for more than fifteen years and was contacted to help them come up with a new plan for expansion. The new 1,000,000-square-foot fulfillment, manufacturing, and warehouse center will provide the space needed to more effectively run their business. The large expansion project hopes to add 1,000+ new jobs over the next ten years to its existing base of 3,200 employees in Minnesota.
WSN will be involved at every stage of design. One of the first services we provided on this project was aerial mapping and a LiDAR survey. Our photogrammetrists used the collected data to efficiently survey the property to identify existing conditions including buildings, vegetation, topography, and other above grade elements. Our land survey crews identified property boundary surveys, located underground utilities, and provided ground control for the aerial team. As the new project is built, our surveryors will provide construction staking services.
Our environmental team is currently working to complete an Alternative Urban Area Review of the property to identify the impact of the development to the environment and surrounding areas with the final report to include recommendations on how to mitigate those impacts.
WSN's architects and engineers have designed the new facility and site to meet Digi-Key’s needs through the year 2030.
Some design considerations include:
- Meets FM Global design requirements.
- All precast construction.
- Separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- Skyway link between new and existing facility.
- Shipping and receiving docks and airlocks.
- Multiple employee breakrooms and employee engagement areas.
- Site walkways to encourage fitness.
