Mille Lacs Academy
Mille Lacs Academy is designed to support the treatment of children and adolescents with behavioral, psychological, and psychiatric needs. The campus design, totaling 84,264 sq.ft., consists of four buildings that serve the Academy’s administrative, educational, programmatic, and recreational requirements. Considerable efforts were made to create a home-like context. Building exteriors combine stone, lap siding, sloped roofs, and dormers. The gymnasium’s gambrel roof and cupolas clearly distinguish the building’s function while harmonizing with the campus’ rural setting. Double-hung windows throughout all of the buildings fill interior spaces with natural light and further contribute to the campus’ non-institutional atmosphere. Laid out around a central courtyard, the site creates a sense of “neighborhood” rather than “institution.”
Inside and out, the campus and its facilities are nurturing and home-like with the goal of instilling feelings of safety and comfort while the clients are in treatment.
