The City of Alexandria’s “The Missing Link: A Complete Streets Demonstration Project” received the Award for Innovations in Public & Stakeholder Engagement in the 2017 MnDOT Environmental Stewardship Awards. Following the 2014 reconstruction of downtown’s Broadway Avenue, a connection between the Central Lakes Trail and the revitalized historic downtown was needed. Dubbed “The Missing Link,” the City of Alexandria partnered with Horizon Public Health to implement a Complete Streets demonstration project. Designed to be in place for only six weeks during the 2016 tourist season, City crews assembled temporary materials that mimicked a Complete Streets model: road diet, bicycle lanes, trees, bump-outs, and other aesthetic features. The 1.5-block-long demonstration project engaged the public and provided data that the team will evaluate and incorporate into the project.
