The Brainerd Lakes Area has become a destination for craft beer connoisseurs, and Cuyuna Brewing Company is the latest brewery to hop onto the scene. Located in the historic Young Building on Main Street, Crosby, MN, the brewery and tap room offers a lineup of five unique beers, with more on the horizon.
Cuyuna Brewing Company started out as a dream for owners Nick and Laura Huisinga back in 2015. They reached out to area professionals for help, and Baratto Brothers Construction—the general contractor for the project—recommended that Nick and Laura turn to Widseth Smith Nolting for architectural and engineering expertise.
WSN’s team looked at locations with Nick and Laura and provided insight into what it would take to convert this historic building into a brewery. In addition to creating a welcoming, comfortable tap room, the team would need to make sure the very specific electrical and mechanical system requirements for the brewery equipment could be incorporated. WSN’s architects and engineers translated these goals and requirements into drawings and specifications used for bidding, construction, and permitting.
The Cuyuna Brewing Company project is a great example of adaptive reuse—reviving an historic structure for a new purpose while respecting its heritage. Through the tireless efforts, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit of Nick and Laura, another Main Street storefront has found new life and has been given back to downtown Crosby.
