The face of downtown Owatonna is about to change. Owatonna Historic Partners’ (OHP) Downtown Redevelopment Project is creating a vision for the city center. A mix of projects including new construction and historic preservation is underway.
A significant portion of the future development centers around an eight-story Hilton Garden Inn hotel located on the 200 block of Cedar Avenue North. The hotel is being proposed by OHP’s partners Jim Kelley, Steve Hedberg, and Owatonna resident Steve Judd. Widseth Smith Nolting’s David Kane has been the lead architect on the project since 2014. Kane, along with the rest of the WSN design team, is also working on concepts for redevelopment and repurposing of two historic buildings adjacent to the hotel. Construction costs for both projects are estimated at $22 to $24 million.
Additional projects included in Owatonna’s development plans include a five-story, 54-unit luxury apartment building at 111 Vine Street; a new restaurant and banquet hall on Cedar Avenue; and a 33-unit apartment project a block north of the proposed hotel.
