The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has two grant programs available to help fund source water protection projects. Here’s what you need to know about the programs. 

1. Source Water Protection Plan Implementation Grant

WHO’S ELIGIBLE:
Community and non-transient non-community public water suppliers that have a current MDH-approved wellhead protection plan or MDH-endorsed intake protection plan.

WHAT IT’S FOR:
Funding from this program must be used on activities that are specifically mentioned in the approved source water protection plan. All work must be limited to inside the geographic extent of the source water protection area.

TYPE OF FUNDING:
Grant. The maximum grant award for a single applicant is $10,000. There is no cost share requirement.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:
The application period opens on September 1 and closes on September 30.

2. Source Water Protection Competitive Grant

WHO’S ELIGIBLE:
Community and non-transient non-community public water suppliers.

WHAT IT’S FOR:
Funding from this program must be used on activities that focus on managing or eliminating one or more potential sources of contamination. Potential sources of contamination must be identified in a source water protection plan, sanitation survey, or recognized by the MN Department of Health through correspondence with the public water supplier.

Common activities include: sealing unused well, constructing new well, installing monitoring well, inspecting well, educating citizens, spill/emergency response planning.

TYPE OF FUNDING:
Grant. The maximum grant award for a single applicant is $10,000. This may be increased to $30,000 when three or more public water suppliers apply under the same application. There is an equal cost share requirement.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:
The application period opens on October 1 and closes on October 31.
