The North Koochiching Area Sanitary District serves 7,000 residents along Rainy Lake in northern Minnesota. The 60-year-old facility required multiple improvements, including new screening/grit removal building, primary/secondary clarifier and trickling filter replacement, tertiary sand filtration for mercury removal, and bio-solids dewatering with storage. Flow equalization basin, lift station, and stabilization pond improvements were also completed. Construction was phased over three years. Widseth Smith Nolting’s funding specialists helped secure more than $15 million in grants and loans for this project from multiple sources.
