Funding for trails and recreation areas

Posted by

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has two opportunities for grant funding this spring — the (1) Outdoor Recreation Grant Program and the (2) Local Trail Connections Program. Each is designed to help communities pay for improvements to, or the development of, trail connections and recreation areas. Here’s what you need to know about the programs.

(2) MN DNR Local Trail Connections Program

WHO’S ELIGIBLE:
Cities, counties, townships, and recognized tribal governments.

WHAT IT’S FOR:
The Local Trail Connections Program provides grant funding to promote short trail connections between where people live and desirable locations, not to develop significant new trails. Eligible projects include acquisition and development of trail facilities, and projects must result in a trail linkage that is immediately available for public use. Development projects require a 20-year maintenance commitment by the project sponsor. Projects inside state park boundaries, state recreation areas, or on state trail corridors are not eligible.

TYPE OF FUNDING:
Up to 50% of the total eligible project costs can be reimbursed through grant funding. The maximum grant award is $150,000.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND DEADLINE:
The application deadline is March 31, 2017. Applications are then ranked during Spring 2017 and grant awards are announced Summer 2017.
