On September 10th the Brainerd School Board approved designs for three elementary schools as part of the Blueprint 181 plan. The projects include a new school in Baxter, as well as significant upgrades to Harrison and Nisswa. Widseth Smith Nolting and JLG Architects worked together on the schematic designs.

The new elementary school in Baxter is planned to house five sections of kindergarten through fourth grade, with room to expand to six sections at each grade level. The school is also designed to accommodate a second gym in the future if funding is available.

Improvements to Nisswa Elementary School include expanding the gym, adding a two-story classroom wing, remodeling the southern end of the building, expanding the cafeteria, and remodeling the kitchen and office area. The office is being moved to the new main entrance, which is centrally located, and will improve safety at the school.

Harrison Elementary School will essentially double in size. The new addition will include a gym, the main office, music room, and media room. Classrooms will primarily be housed in Harrison’s existing footprint. The old gym will turn into the cafeteria and the school’s main entrance will move from Oak Street to Norwood Street for safety reasons and transportation efficiency.
